ChatGPT has landed and it has sent large shockwaves through many industries. One particular industry where it’s gaining popularity is corporate Learning & Development (L&D). But how effective is it as a professional development coach? Let’s look at the good, bad and ugly of using ChatGPT for professional learning & development. The stigma: Are people ready to fully let a computer take control? History suggests we are not.
The stigma associated with people interacting with chat-bots often comes from a history of distrust in an artificial intelligence. Many worry that the technology is not advanced enough to understand them, or they are worried about privacy and data harvesting. Despite advances in AI and machine learning, many people still prefer to interact with real people as it seems more natural and trustworthy.
People may be hesitant to talk to a chatbot because it lacks the emotional connection of human conversation. Ultimately, the long-term outcome remains to be seen, but at least for now people still prefer to interact with other people over robotic counterparts.

The rise of social media has made content a commodity, and the corporate learning and development industry is no exception, with vast amounts of content being generated by those in the industry. The rise of LinkedIn/ business influencers has only added to the noise.
However, with ChatGPT, creating quality content is now much easier than ever before. As a result, there will be an increase in generic, low-value content being produced which may not hold much educational value or benefit learners. Organizations need to be aware of two things moving forward:
- Ensure they are investing in quality content that adds real value to their employees’ development.
- Ensure L&D is being done through a system that drives long-term engagement. A lot of companies exist with high libraries. They make a big splash when they first arrive at a company, but usage dies away and engagement drops to 1-2% long term.
The ability to absorb data WILL run into privacy issues, especially here in Europe.
AI has the capability of taking in massive amounts of data and translating it into useful information. This could mean anything from analyzing customer behavior, creating accurate predictions about future trends, and providing quick solutions to existing problems. However, this powerful technology also brings up questions of privacy, especially when companies are using AI to gain access to personal emails or chat conversations. Chatbots have come a long way since they were first introduced to the public. Unfortunately, their journey has not been without controversy and issues. Reports of chatbots being trained by the public to be racist, sexist, and generally offensive and hurtful have become increasingly common. What’s worse is that these chatbots can go undetected in online conversations, spreading such negative messages and attitudes with no one ever knowing it was a machine behind it all. This has made many wary of using and interacting with such artificial intelligence, creating a sad and ugly history for chatbot technology.
